Overview

The Hip Hop Caucus launched HipHopHelpHaiti.org within 72 hours of the 7.0 M earthquake on January 12, 2010, to provide people with ways to stay informed, connected, and prepared to take action. HipHopHelpHaiti.org is a network meant to empower people to organize in response to the crisis in Haiti. Hip Hop Caucus staff is committed to updating the site with concrete ways to provide assistance to the Haitian people now as well as in the long term. In addition, the site encourages the public to put forth any other information related to Haiti and any current or future projects. HipHopHipHaiti.org allows users to create awareness events and fundraisers, start discussions, start groups, and begin organizing immediately!

Event Highlights

National Organizing Conference Call

On January 19, 2010, one week after the devastating earthquake, HipHopHelpHaiti organized a national conference call to provide listeners with information, context, and actions to take in support of Haiti. It was a rallying call for everyone to act swiftly and be prepared to stay involved for what is a long road to recovery for our Haitian brothers and sisters. Participants included:

Candlelight Vigil

On January 19,2010 at 4:53pm, exactly one week to the minute after the earthquake, HipHopHelpHaiti partnered with TransAfrica Forum and Haitian Ambassador Raymond Joseph to gather in front of the Haiti Embassy in Washington, D.C., to show support for the 300,000 people who lost their lives, were severely injured or were left in the midst of the rubble in Haiti.  The candlelight vigil united our hearts with our 'family' in Haiti and showed resolve that we will stand with them.

 

Hip Hop 4 Haiti

In an effort to aid the people of Haiti who faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, the national hip-hop community in partnership with the Hip Hop Caucus presented Hip Hop 4 Haiti Food & Clothing Drive. Hip Hop 4 Haiti National Day was on January 30, 2010 where the youth and hip-hop communities in 32 cities nationwide and in Costa Rica hosted events to collect food & clothing for Haitian earthquake survivors.  The events mobilized and united the hip-hop community and provided a lasting and necessary impact for the people of Haiti through a genuine and familiar medium. Community members donated non-perishable food items and clothing. Performers included:

White House Update Conference Call

In efforts to keep the concerned communities in the United States informed about the situation in Haiti, the White House organized and invited HipHopHelpHaiti to participate on a conference call with Administration officials on Friday, January 22, 2010. On the call the White House provided updates as to what was happening on the ground, continued guidance on donations, and open up for discussion on other issues. This call was an off the record call intended for community groups and organizations, not for press purposes.
