NO
TO AFRICOM |
 |
|
On February 6, 2007, the Bush administration announced plans
to establish a unified U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), stating
that it “will enhance our efforts to bring peace and
security to the people of Africa and promote our common
goals of development, health, education, democracy, and
economic growth in Africa.” The AFRICOM mandate means
that U.S.- Africa policy will be further driven by military
engagement rather than diplomacy, development and genuine
partnerships. The Bush Administration is mapping out
an approach to Africa that is more focused on security and
resources than the development of Africa’s economies,
which will lead to further instability and insecurity throughout
the continent. We must stop the creation of the new Africa
Command (AFRICOM) by demanding that Congress cuts off
funding to this frightening initiative.

MAKE HIP HOP NOT WAR CAMPAIGN
|
 |
The
Make Hip Hop Not War Campaign connects how the war in Iraq
is impacting our communities at home. The bombs in Iraq are
exploding in the streets of Americas urban centers. We are
putting a de-habilitating amount of tax dollars towards this
war (find out how much the war has cost your community at
the National Priorities Project), which has
killed over 1,000,000 Iraqi brothers and sisters. Meanwhile,
our communities are suffering with failing education systems
and healthcare only afforded to the privileged. We cannot
stand silent while our tax money is going to slaughter Iraqis
and we are denied adequate resources and infrastructure to
have equal opportunity for our generation and the next.
In March and April 2007 the Hip Hop Caucus hit the streets
and organized a sixteen city national bus tour with Hip Hop
Artists, Iraq War Veterans, youth leaders, peace and security
experts, and Members of Congress. We spoke to hundreds of
people in each city and educated them on how what the costs
of the war are and how to take action and have their voices
heard. In 2008, we continue to put the message out there:
“Make Hip Hop, Not War!” |

IRAQ REFUGEE PROJECT |
 |
The
Iraqi Refugee Project is the newest effort of the Hip Hop
Caucus. The concept was created after the Hip Hop Caucus travelled
to Jordan in August 2007 to witness the humanitarian crisis
among Iraqi refugees in the Middle East. The story of Iraqi
Refugees and Internally Displaced is unfortunately hardly
reported in the media, yet is one of the most destabilizing
factors in the Middle East and is a direct result of the U.S.
occupation of Iraq. The intent the project is two-fold. It
will educate Americans about the humanitarian crisis and it
will provide a way for Americans to send aid directly to Iraqi-led
programs that provide basic needs to Iraqi Refugees. The goal
of the project is to increase American’s opposition
to the occupation and to create more linkages between the
people of Iraq and the people of the United States. This project
is still in development stages.
Please contact us if you would like
to get involved. |

GULF COAST RENEWAL CAMPAIGN
|
 |
|
*The GCRC was awarded the 30th Annual Letelier-Moffitt
Human Rights Award
The Gulf Coast Renewal Campaign (GCRC), a project initiated
by the Hip Hop Caucus, grew out of an ad-hoc coalition of
organizations and individuals who, since September 1, 2005
have been fighting for the rights of those displaced by
Hurricane Katrina. The destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina
in the Gulf Coast region and the ongoing struggle of Gulf
Coast residents to return to their communities and cities
has revealed a critical need for a renewed, coordinated
and organized effort in the South for racial, social and
economic justice.
Find out more specifically about the vast amount of work
we have done in the Gulf Coast and around the Country for
Katrina survivors here.
Currently, our focus is on housing issues in New Orleans
for survivors who remain displaced.

SHIRLEY CHISHOLM OSSIE DAVIS LEADERSHIP
INSTITUTE
|
 |
| The
Shirley Chisholm Ozzie Davis Leadership Institute
is a project designed to support young leaders who are fighting
for real change and leading others in the process. Shirley
Chisholm was the first African-American women elected to Congress
and to run for President. Ozzie Davis was an actor/activist,
who used his platform as a celebrity to speak out against
racial injustice. We chose these two individuals to inspire
our leadership institute because of their unique styles of
leadership that are important models for those in our generation
who are artist/activists or who want to get involved in politics |

WAR
ON GREED |
 |
|
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death"
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“Poverty is the Worst form of violence.”
-Mahatma Gandhi
It is in the spirit of Dr. King and Gandhi that we analyze economic policy especially as it affects the working class and those living below the poverty line to make economic injustice visible. We partnered with Brave New Foundation to expose the ways in which the very wealthy use our tax dollars to exploit workers. Check out the website here. Also take a look at the
40 Years Later: The Unrealized American
Dream, which provides evidence of striking little economic progress in closing the gap between African Americans and whites since Dr. King's death, particularly in the area of economic equality.

UNITED
TO SAVE OUR CLIMATE |
 |
|
To win
this crusade against global warming we must build a broader
social base for our movement. United to Save Our Climate is
the Hip Hop Caucus’ contribution to a greater Climate
movement that empowers the communities most impacted by
global warming – low-income communities and communities of
color – to be a part of the solution to our climate crisis.
To curb global warming and oil dependence we must find new
and creative ways to embrace the green movement. The Hip Hop
Caucus is working with Green for All (Greenforall.org)
to ensure that disadvantaged communities are at the
forefront of the emerging green economy, allowing us to
fight both poverty and pollution at the same time. |
